Northern Railway Town of Ravensburg
The preservation of high-quality existing buildings and their integration into new urban structures forms the foundation for the urban design. The theme of permeable block-edge structures made up of differentiated building volumes with varying depths and heights, along with garden courtyards, is continued. The site of the old machine factory will be carefully transformed into a new innovation district. Three focal points: Inspired by the prominent tower of the TWS building, another subtle landmark is proposed as a junction at Georgstraße. Together with the “Painted Tower,” these form a visual orientation triangle that marks the innovation district. The urban design includes a consistent and innovative mobility concept. The open space concept gently develops the existing spatial layers based on the current substance and the new urban structure, making them legible. In addition to boulevard-like streets, complemented by neighborhood alleys, green garden courtyards, and tree-lined pocket plazas, three characteristic open spaces for the Railway Town emerge: the western Schussenstraße as a generous open space connection between the Green Ring and Escher-Steg, the “Place at the Old Gasworks” as an urban space in a post-industrial context, and the courtyard in the Innovation Triangle as a public space for socio-cultural inspiration.
