Our vision for a world-class venue, for a cultural meeting place of the highest radiance, our vision for a new icon has been consigned to the wastepaper basket.

A loss not only for our office. A great loss for Munich, for Bavaria and for the entire music world.

We would like to thank everyone who believed in this great project.

We wish the top-class team of the Bavarian Radio and Symphony Orchestra a new home that can live up to its high standards.

The ED-Awards are annual awards for outstanding European design. The Atelier Andrea Gassner, Feldkirch, with the support of innovative clients Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architects, Bregenz, and former mayor Christa Köppel, Widnau, has developed a completely new wayfinding system with differently structured handrail profiles for the construction of the nursing home in Widnau. The design’s “attention to detail” was awarded the European Design Award 2024 in Gold in the category “Signage & Wayfinding” on Saturday, July 1, 2024, in Naples.

In institutions such as hospitals and care facilities, people with limited cognitive abilities often move around, for various reasons. As cognitive functions decline, the emotional level becomes increasingly important. In addition to the traditional orientation system, the design concept by Atelier Andrea Gassner (Christopher Walser, Andrea Gassner) includes a tactile orientation. Long-tested and also manufactured in Vorarlberg, turned wooden handrail profiles with different textures are assigned to each floor and residential area. They look good, are visually and, above all, haptically distinguishable by their use. In the entrance area, there is an overview of the different handrail textures with the following accompanying text: “At my age, seeing and walking are not the same as they used to be. That’s why I also rely on my hands to support and find my way. The different textures of the handrails in this building are a great help to me. I can feel with my hands where I am and thus understand the way.”

Almost simultaneously, this design work received international recognition through the ADC Award 2024 – Silver in the category Design for Good/Product Design, which was awarded to Atelier Andrea Gassner on May 14th in New York.

We pursue the goal of creating the highest utility value and occupying an equally important cultural position. Our awareness of resource-conserving construction, good and regional materials, robustness and longevity are a natural part of our attitude. We want to touch people with our emotional architecture, we try to lend beauty to things and develop buildings that are loved, because architecture that is respected and appreciated in the literal sense lasts in the long term and is therefore sustainable in a special way. We make an important contribution to the further development of building culture by engaging intensively with a wide variety of content and themes. We create something meaningful and lasting and thus change the world a little.

The new structural ensemble is made up of two different structures, each of which reacts to its immediate surroundings as a complementary piece. The building which defines the square is two-storey on the eaves side and, like its historic neighbours, has a solitary design. Three large west-facing gable elements adopt the historical rhythm of the characteristic ridge landscape. These three buildings house a restaurant and retail space on the ground floor as well as services on the two upper floors, functions that will enliven the new village centre and bring it to life. In the east of the site, the main hall will be located with attractive views of the Storchenbüel.

Manfred has been working in lighting design for many years and has literally brightened up several projects with us. These include the basilica in Rankweil, the Zehntfeld nursing home in Widnau, the Sülchenkirche church in Rottenburg and the vorarlberg museum. Without light, humans would have no visual perception at all. But perhaps we only realise how important light is for us when we realise that we can see and also feel it. A lighting situation always has a direct influence on our mood. When it comes to lighting design, particular attention should therefore be paid to ensure that the lighting provided corresponds to the natural perception of light. The room should be perceivable as a whole and the lighting should also provide orientation for visitors – guiding them into the building or through a site. We would like to thank Manfred very much for being with us and for his fascinating talk.

After many years as an IT manager and business consultant, Mario founded Triami over 20 years ago – a passion project for him. Triami has been with us for many years and through the most diverse phases, which have always been linked to increasing demands on IT. For us, it was and still is essential that all employees are well trained in dealing with IT and can easily recognise any threats and thus avert dangers. We would like to thank Mario and his team for supporting us for so many years and for always making everything possible.

With its alignment not to the network of streets, but to the strong and distinctive element of the railway embankment, the new apartment building with 54 units is seven storeys high and relates to the mid-rise buildings in the surrounding area. A second volume with a pitched roof integrates the new restaurant. The volume with its single-storey layout and striking appearance develops distant memories of the existing building, while its special typology generates a strong presence in the intersection area and a significant impact on the entire neighbourhood. The twisting of the two solitary buildings in relation to each other creates a shared open space as a guest garden, which naturally integrates the existing chestnut tree.

20231201 Monika Heiss

As the daughter of a textile manufacturing family, Monika came into touch with the subject of colour at an early age. By chance, she took part in a colour course later in her career – and she can now look back on 25 years as a specialist planner for colour design. Monika works with colour charts, samples and originals and mostly without a computer – and she seems to know a story for every shade of colour. Colour is an elementary component of our perception and always has an immediate effect on us. When designing the colour scheme of rooms, facades or public spaces, it is important to avoid overstimulation and monotony. Contrasts are needed that are both diversified and calming. The more pleasantly designed rooms are, the more considerate the people who spend time in them will act. We would like to thank Monika for her always colourful, cheerful appearance, her enthusiasm spread directly to us.

Sigi Ramoser from Büro Sägenvier visited us for a lecture on wayfinding and signage. Signage is more than a guidance system. Signage is orientation in terms of thought and content. Good signage gives a building its own identity. Sägenvier has already been with us on several signage projects and competitions: the Vorarlberg Museum in Bregenz, the headquarters of Gebrüder Weiss in Lauterach, the headquarters of Schelling in Schwarzach, the fire station in Thuringia, RWT in Kirchberg, the competition for Doppelmayr Rickenbach. We thank Sigi for his visit and the extremely interesting, entertaining and vivid lecture.

A lecture entitled »The complexity of the simple« by Andreas Cukrowicz will be held at the Department of Public Building of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics on Monday, 30.11.2023 at 12:15 pm. Admission is free.

The existing site is characterised by the striking topography of a plateau above the river Sitter in a prime sunny location with a view from afar. On this »sunny plateau«, the former home for the poor and current retirement home is a strong, monument-protected solitary building with high quality and recognition value. For the extension, a structure is required that does not compete with the existing solitary building, that is subordinate and does not take centre stage, that preserves the dignity of the valuable existing building despite the large additional building volume, that allows it to take the lead and yet finds its own strength and identity, and that mediates a balance between old and new. The historic existing building is restored and becomes the main element of the overall complex.

In a special topographical situation, a new workshop is being built on a plateau of a characteristic rocky landscape. The composition of five staggered buildings of different sizes and proportions responds to both the special shape of the site and the slightly ascending topography. Along the Felsenaustraße, the figure forms a ridge and, together with an additional building organised linearly along the cliff edge, it formulates a courtyard-like situation with maximum space for manipulation and logistics. The staggered building figure consists of a combination of one-storey and two-storey halls and a main building with primary entrance and rooms for administration and canteen on the upper floor. Externally, the building’s staggered structure allows it to be integrated into the fabric of the small-scale contextual buildings, while inside the site, the individual functional areas are easy to read and provide good orientation. The outbuilding with similarities to that of an open-tunnel is cut into the rock formation as a concrete roof and serves primarily as a roofed storage area and shelter.

The concept for the extension of the HAK adopts the philosophy of the existing building and follows the principle of continuing to build while preserving the existing components as best as possible and completing them with a restrained and self-evident new building structure derived from the existing structure. The formerly one-winged school wing is transformed into a two-winged typology with interesting spatial qualities. The new extension layer is connected via docking bridge elements with atriums in between; a skylight situation provides two-sided lighting for the classrooms and creates added spatial value through attractive visual references and recreation zones.

Am Sonntag, den 25. September 2022, wurde das neue Sport- und Freizeitquartier im Rahmen eines Festaktes feierlich eröffnet.
Die Anlagen umfassen eine Dreifach-Sporthalle, Aussenflächen für Kunst- und Naturrasen, Beachvolleyball, Minigolf, eine Laufbahn mit Weitsprunganlage, einen Allwetterplatz und ein neues Eingangsgebäude mit Kiosk und Restaurant für die Badeanlage.

Der Innsbrucker Gestaltungsbeirat sellt sich vor
Eine Veranstaltung mit Wolfgang Andexlinger und den neuen Mitgliedern des IGB

Der Innsbrucker Gestaltungsbeirat, kurz IGB, wurde nach intensiven Diskussionen von der Stadt Innsbruck im Jahr 2013 eingerichtet. Für die Stadt, im Speziellen für die Stadtplanung, ist der Beirat eines der wichtigsten Instrumente, um Baukultur im Stadtgebiet weiter zu fördern. Seither waren die Mitglieder des IGB schon mehrmals im aut und haben über ihre Herangehensweisen gesprochen und sich der Diskussion gestellt.Im Jahr 2021 gab es wieder einen der regelmäßigen Wechsel bei den Mitgliedern des Beirats und so sind nunmehr die Architekt*innen Andreas Cukrowicz (Vorsitz), Kornelia Gysel und Bernd Vlay sowie die Landschaftsarchitektin Marie-Theres Okresek (Stellvertretung) die Hauptmitglieder und damit die agierenden Köpfe des IGB.

In guter Tradition soll der regelmäßige Dialog im aut nun auch mit den Neuen weitergeführt werden. Dabei sollen Meinungen und Haltungen zur Architektur und zum Städtebau sowie formulierte Strategien und Entscheidungen sichtbar gemacht und diskutiert werden, um den gemeinsamen Austausch weiter zu fördern.

Die Veranstaltung wird durch Eingangsstatements von Wolfgang Andexlinger, Stadtplaner von Innsbruck, sowie durch den Vorsitzenden des IGB Andreas Cukrowicz eröffnet.

With a vocational secondary school, a secondary school, a triple sports hall and a zone for special classrooms and administration, the individual areas of each school and each function are thematically and spatially combined into a separate building in each case. Each building has its own address, its own character and its own identity. Each structure is recognisable and has its own personality. Like four friends, the buildings stand together in a circle, pursuing the idea of a small village. Together they define a centre, a village square, a common focal point represented by the entrance hall and assembly hall.

Wir freuen uns mit dem Projekt Bischofsgrablege in Rottenburg am Neckar Preisträger beim Hugo-Häring Landespreis 2021 für vorbildliche Bauwerke in Baden-Württemberg zu sein.
Der Bund Deutscher Architekten BDA – Landesverband Baden-Württemberg – verleiht seit 1969 im Abstand von drei Jahren den Hugo-Häring Landespreis für vorbildliche Bauwerke in Baden-Württemberg an Bauherren und Architekten für ihr gemeinsames Werk. Mit dem Namen Hugo Häring bekennt sich der BDA zur Tradition des „neuen Bauens“ und der „modernen Architektur“ und ehrt den 1882 in Biberach geborenen Architekten.
Der Hugo-Häring-Landespreis ist ein zweistufiger Preis; das Auswahlverfahren erstreckt sich über zwei Jahre.

1. Stufe: Hugo-Häring Auszeichnung:
Die Hugo-Häring-Auszeichnung wird auf regionaler Ebene in den fünfzehn Kreisgruppen des BDA Baden-Württemberg vergeben.
2. Stufe: Hugo-Häring Landespreis:
Der Hugo-Häring Landespreis wird auf Landesebene verliehen.
Die Preisträger werden aus den in der ersten Stufe ausgezeichneten Bauten ausgewählt. Es können mehrere gleichrangige Arbeiten gewürdigt werden.
Zum Auszeichnungsverfahren 2020/2021 wurden 679 Bauwerke eingereicht, von denen 130 eine Hugo-Häring-Auszeichnung erhielten.
Aus diesen wählte die Jury im September 10 Bauten für den Hugo-Häring Landespreis aus.

We are thrilled to share, that the Bayerischer Landtag has given approval for the further design phases of the Munich Concert Hall.

The Mainau 2040 Masterplan competition includes a large number of different functions and buildings, all of which contribute to the same strategy: the sustainable further development of Mainau as a cultural treasure. The island is already listed as a monument of special importance. The focus was on the careful use of resources in harmony with nature in the sensitive region of Lake Constance as well as on aesthetic-cultural sustainability. The highlight and landmark is the new Palm Cathedral, which forms the new focal point of the island. The self-contained building, which was developed especially for this location, consists of four barrel-like glass volumes. These contain event and exhibition facilities, a restaurant and a jungle playground. Four differently shaped, elegant structural elements – evocative of floral structures – createimpressive spaces and are the unique selling point of the new building, responsible for its high recognition and identification value.

Competition 2020, 2nd Prize

The design proposal for the new school is a predominantly timber construction with a repetitive structural rhythm. This allows for an open, robust and versatile form that does not prescribe a specific use, making it fit for the future. Interconnected structures, links and combinations, open and closed zones, air spaces and atriums, balconies and outdoor terraces, as differentiated places, not only form the structural parameters, they also form the basis for future uses. They imagine learning and working in the most diverse constellations; new communities and creative networking, for new social worlds.

Seit 1967 lädt die ZV Österreich zur Vortragsreihe „Sprechen über Architektur“ ein. Architektinnen und Architekten verschiedener Generationen, Stars, Etablierte, Radikale, und auch KünstlerInnen sowie TheoretikerInnen sprechen über Architektur und ihre Arbeiten. Sie zeigen einen Ausschnitt aus der hohen Qualität der Architekturproduktion und des architektonischen Denkens in den verschiedenen Bundesländern Österreichs. Die ZV Österreich öffnete im Juni ihr Medienarchiv und startete die neue Online-Vortragsreihe „Sprechen über Architektur >>revisited“. Nun wird diese mit weiteren zehn Vorträgen aus den letzten zehn Jahren ergänzt, die ab Montag, den 21. Dezember 2020, abrufbar sind.

Developed as a subtle addition to the historical ensemble of freestanding buildings, this new office mediates between two linear urban structures by assuming a parallelogram-shaped footprint. At the same time, tracing the street, the addition spatially redefines and sharpens the flow of Marktgasse while increasing the prominence of neighboring existing buildings. Three gable elements of equal size facing south take up the historical rhythm of the characteristic roof ridge landscape. The formation of a single transverse gable towards Landsgemeindeplatz makes the building recognisable and asserts the location of the courtroom as the most important room of the building.

Two new buildings, which share a square shape but vary in height, complement the neighbouring church, technical school and elementary school to create a balanced new architectural ensemble. The precise placement of the new buildings develops distinctive, well-proportioned outdoor spaces which define a village square as the new centre of the district. The two square volumes help to create order in the heterogeneous environment.

The Bishop’s Burial Vault in Rottenburg was honoured with the 3rd prize at the 2020 GEPLANT+AUSGEFÜHRT award. The competition shows and awards examples of exceptional architecture in combination with exceptional craftsmanship. It is the only architectural competition which does not only honour the architects but also the work of the craftsmen.

The Bishop’s Burial Vault in Rottenburg was awarded with a recognition at the State Award for Building Culture Baden-Württemberg 2020 on 30th March 2020. The prize was offered by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing of Baden-Württemberg.

House builders and craftsmen who like to experiment, pioneering architects, a liberal building law, an open-minded population and a culture of cooperation are responsible for the fact that a very special density of interesting architecture has been created in Vorarlberg for five decades. In this exhibition, the Az W Architekturzentrum Wien shows key buildings by the building artists Hans Purin, Rudolf Wäger, Gunter Wratzfeld and the architects’ community C4 and places them in relation to works by a younger generation: ARTEC Architects, bernardo bader architects, Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architects, HEIN Architects, Helena Weber Architect. The intergenerational dialogue is to be understood literally: “Old” and “Young” meet in filmed conversations and exchange ideas about distinctive buildings and protagonists. A concrete table structure creates an open ground floor zone and three room levels in wood. The formal design idea evokes the image of a tree. The combined result is modular living in maximum privacy in the treetops of a beautiful park.

On December 4th 2019 the PHILOLOGICUM, the central library for the philological subjects at the LMU Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich, was officially opened.

The AZW Architekturzentrum Wien is showing an exhibition entitled “Vorarlberg – a generation dialogue” and invites you to the opening on 04.12.2019 at 7:00 p.m. The exhibition spans an arc from the legendary building artists Hans Purin, Rudolf Wäger, Gunter Wratzfeld and the architects’ community C4 to the current generation, represented by ARTEC Architects, Bernardo Bader, Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architects, Matthias Hein and Helena Weber. Exhibition duration from 05.12.2019 to 10.02.2020.

Building on the neighbourhood’s compositional theme of multi-height buildings, a seven-storey, tower-like volume will be developed on  a set-back site east of the former textile school, which will continue the gentle undulation of the roofscape and relate to the high points of the quarter.

Temporary buildings, three-dimensional structures and spaces made of one material: space defines itself as dimensions of height, length and width. However, the conception of unconventional and surprising spaces is about much more than following the basic principles of design. What makes a room a three-dimensional emotional experience? The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design honoured the Bishop’s Burial Vault in Rottenburg with the International Architecture Award 2018.

On Thursday, July 12, 2018, the contract was handed to Andreas Cukrowicz and Anton Nachbaur at a ceremonial act in the Prinz-Carl-Palais.

Drawing on the idea of a progression of public spaces, the project is spread across two buildings which are offset from each other. That gives rise to a theme of ‘tight and narrow’, which evokes a typical streetscape and also allows the composition to open onto public piazzas.

The new quarter is organised as a patchwork of various sports- and play facilities, punctuated by individually landscaped pathways and patios. By minimising the visible volume of the hall, the new building appears as a freestanding pavilion.  This design idea has straightforward origins: the sunken hall area evokes the form of a simple vessel, while the roof acts as its lid. Four solid circulation cores support a corporeal roof, lending a sense of activity to the overall appearance.
